The Ladies World Snooker Championships got under way at the Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds UK on Saturday 18th April. The first set of group matches began at 9.30am with our 3 lady representatives all in action. All the group matches at this level was going to test our players. Margaret Browne was in group A with 10 times World Champion Reanne Evans and World U/21 Champion Jessica Woods from Australia along with Anastasia Trunina from Belarus.
Margaret’s match against Anastasia was nip and tuck all the way, but Anastasia took frame 1 on the colours and again took the second on the blue. In the 3rd frame Margaret fought to the black to take it, giving Anastasia the 2-1 win. In her match against Jessica Woods it was slow to start but once Jessica got in amongst the balls, she made breaks of 40 and 37 to help take a 2 nil lead. Frame 3 Margaret had some chances but again the strong potting and safety from Jessica, secured her the 3 nil win over Margaret.
Margaret had it all to do in her match against the current World Champion Reanne Evans. Margaret started by potting a long red to leave her a chance of a difficult black along the cushion but just missed letting Reanne in to have a pot on a red and from that red she went on to have a fantastic 100 break. Frame 2 started well for Margaret but once again Reanne took it with a 47 break. The 3rd frame Reanne started with a 34 break and left Margaret tight on the cushion, Margaret had a go at a difficult red and only just missed when Reanne got back to the table to have a 26 break and secure her 3 nil win over Margaret. Well done to Margaret on giving her best in such a difficult group and in doing so did us proud.
Annette Newman had a good days play winning one of her two matches. Michelle Brown started well in frame one but Annette came back strong to force a black ball, however Michelle potted a long black to take it. In frame 2 Michelle had a 45 break to take it and so it was onto frame 3, Annette had chances in it and again made it a close affair down to the blue and pink with Michelle having to clear up to give her a 3 nil win. Annette’s next match was against Gaye Jones and started well taking the first on the blue. Annette again started well going into a strong lead but Gaye had chances to win, however Annette took the second on the colours. Frame 3 started well for Annette but Gaye came back to go down to the colours. It was close but Gaye potted blue pink and black to secure the frame.
Sandra Bryan was up against Tajana Vasiljeva from Latvia in her first group match in the morning. The first frame was down to the pink and Tajana potted it to go 1 up. In frame 2 Sandra had chances once again but with a 40 break from Tajana went 2 in front. Frame 3 was again very close going down to the black with both players having a few chances, however Tajana took it to give her a 3 nil win over Sandra in otherwise very close encounter. Sandra’s second match on the day was against Laura Alves and it started well for Sandra securing the first comfortably however Laura came back strong to level the match at 1-1 the 3rd frame was close going into the colours but Sandra closed out the frame taking green to pink to give her the 2-1 win.
