Annette Newman took the inaugural Carlow County Championship title at the Ivy Rooms Carlow recently. With a field of 16 players, the event was hailed a fantastic success by RILSA as these County Championships are organised and played all around the Country over the coming months.
With three National title holders among the entrants, Keara Minion our RILSA National Primary School Champion, Neicy Kavanagh the National Special Needs Champion and Annette Newman the National Billiards Champion and current Irish number 1 in both snooker & billiards, the competition was set to be fierce as these players took to the green baize.
Tara Byrne from Ballinabranna reached her first ever final after a great display of snooker throughout the event. There were no surprizes as the 4 seeded players reached the semi finals on the day, however they all had to work hard to win over their opponents who put up a great show for their efforts which is very commendable indeed.
On her way to the final Annette had wins over Zoe Smith, L16, Shannon Wilson, quarters and Keara Minion in the semis while Tara had good wins over Celine Byrne, L16, Natasha Walker, quarters and Neicy Kavanagh in the semis to meet Annette in the final.
The final was played in good spirit as both players went for their shots and enjoyed it, however it was Annette who proved the stronger on the day and cleared the colours for frame and match.
Congratulations to Annette on her great win and to Tara on her fine performance throughout
Thanks to all the players for their support and to Rachel and Kate who brought along 11 players on the day. Thanks to Sharon, Marion and staff of the Ivy Rooms for the fantastic facilities for this event. All the women and girls are looking forward to more events and coaching during the season ahead.
