The inaugural International Ladies Irish Open Billiards Championship took place over the weekend of the Irish International Snooker Open at D’Arcy McGees Spawell Dublin.

In the round robin stages of the event, Annette Newman the current Irish Ladies Billiards Champion and number 1 won her group having accumulated 109 points but had to stay focused against a strong comeback from Jennifer Earle, however Annette’s experience won on the day, while in the other group we saw Christine Carr (Irl) just pip Laura Alves (Brazil) by 50-48 in their 30 minute timed match.  Tina Keogh closed out with only seconds to go to win over Christine Carr 49-43, so it was all down to Tina’s match against Laura to see who would qualify to meet Annette in the final.

It was close for the first 20 minutes but Laura rose to the occasion and finished strong for a 58-36 win over Tina and go through to the final against Annette.

This was the first time for both Annette & Laura to contest such an event as the International Irish Open Billiards Championship and it certainly didn’t disappoint as both players were well up to the challenge.

Annette started well going into a 40+ lead after 30 minutes of play knocking a number of small breaks 16’s and 18’s but Laura came back strong with breaks of 14 and 18 to help close the gap within a few points with just 1 minute left on the clock in this 60 minute final, Annette went in off laura’s cue ball and left herself with a losing hazard into the center pocket, making sure of the angle from the “D” she went in off the red as the clock timed out to win the match and title of International Ladies Irish Open Billiards Champion 2019.

A fantastic result for Annette and indeed Laura as both these women make history in female billiards.  Never before have Irish females took part in an International female Billiard event and so too for Laura from Brazil, this sport is not even played by males in Brazil so Laura is the first person to represent her country on the International Stage in the sport of Billiards, fantastic news for female billiards as we continue to encourage more females into the sport.

Congratulations to Annette on her great win and to Laura on a fine performance.  Thanks to all the girls who participated and made it such a great success.

Thanks to Richie, Paul and staff along with the management of D’Arcy McGees for their support and to everyone involved with female billiards here in Ireland.

Thanks to Deputy Mayor Trevor Gilligan who officiated at the prize giving and to Cllr’s Deirdre Heney, Deirdre O’Donovan and Carly Bailey for their great support.
