The Republic of Ireland Women’s Billiards saw a new name take her first National Billiards Ranking title in Christine Carr from Kildare after a few years of chasing the Irish Champion and number 1, Annette Newman (Carlow) at a great display of billiards from both these ladies at the second ranking event of the billiards season at Sharkx Newbridge recently.

Annette’s 9 unbeaten run of National Billiards Ranking titles spanning over 2 years came to a close recently as Christine broke the winning run from Annette.

All of the players on the evening were playing very well indeed as they all upped their game for this second ranking of the season.

In the round robin matches, Valerie Maloney (Offaly) got off to a slow start against Christine Carr (kildare) as Christine went 20 points up however Valerie came back to level on 29 but with minutes remaining, Christine went up a gear to finish 55-29.

Annette Newman (Carlow) had to play well to fight off a good run of play from Stephanie Morrison (Carlow) to finish 62-32 in their timed match.

Valerie played exceptional billiards against the Irish Champion Annette, to finish level at 66-66 while Christine played outstanding billiards against Stephanie with a number of small breaks to win their match 95-46

It was now down to the last set of matches to see who would take the second ranking of the season. Valerie played well against the improving Stephanie to win 56-46

Annette started well against Christine and was looking good to take the second title but Christine held in there to collect as many points she could and with Annette winning 85-73 it was not enough to catch Christine on this occasion.

Annette was delighted that Christine won her first title as she was on the heels of Annette on a number of occasions over the past few years and she deserved the win for her outstanding play on the evening said Annette

Congratulations to Christine on her win and to Annette on her fine performance.  Well done to Valerie & Stephanie on their great display.  Christine now goes up a level in ladies billiards here in Ireland and will not be entering the new Intermediate Women’s Billiards rankings this year which opens the door for the other players to fight for ranking event titles along with the Intermediate National Championship Title later in the year.
