Tuesday 31st March saw the semi final stage of the Dublin Snooker Federation Cup competition kick off with the Griffith club up against Mountjoy and Sportslink A up against Joey’s A
With Mountjoy having a 2 frame start on the Griffith club, we knew that this match would be tight. Martin Garland (Griffith) won his two frames against Anthony Clifford (Mountjoy) to level the match at 2-2. Ronan Deegan (Griffith) and Graham Wilkinson (Mountjoy) both winning a frame each, now the match was 3-3 and with the first team to 7 going through to the final, brought the pressure on, however Steve Patten (Mountjoy) had a good 2 nil win over Daragh Hackett (Griffith) 5-3 to Mountjoy. It was back to the second round of 1 frame games to determine the eventual winner, Martin Garland won his frame against Anthony Clifford bringing the match to 5-4, Ronan lost his frame against Graham on a black ball, making it 6-4 for Mountjoy, Steve Patten held his nerve against Daragh Hackett to win on the colours and bring Mountjoy into the final of the Cup for chance of a 4th Cup title.
The other semi final between Sportslink A with a 3 frame start and Joey’s A with a 4 frame start and both teams trying to reach 7 to meet Mountjoy in the final the tension was building. Mick Walsh (Joey’s A) took his 2 frames against Oisin MacFheari (Sportslink A) to go 6-3 ahead only requiring 1 frame for a place in the final, however Gavin Gahan (Sportslink A) had a good 2 nil win over Pat Cowap (Joey’s A) to close the gap to 6-5. Mark Matthews (Sportslink A) won the first frame against Shane Ragazolli (Joey’s A) to level the match 6-6, however Mark kept his cool and won comfortably his second frame to take Sportslink A into the final against Mountjoy.
