Grace Byrne from Ballinabranna National School in Carlow retained her National Primary School Title recently at Sharkx Newbridge. Grace is the first girl to retain this title and in doing so makes history for girls snooker here in Ireland.
Carlow was well represented at this years Championship with entries also from Kildare with Holly O’Neill representing Newbridge Educate Together. A number of newcomers to the sport in Katie Sweeney, Lillymay Hosey, Abbie McDonald and Elisha Molloy all really enjoyed their first outing to snooker and will continue to play the sport.
In the Quarters, Grace Byrne had a comfortable win over Katie Sweeney while Lillymay Hosey pipped Abbie McDonald to meet Grace in the semis.
In the other half of the draw we saw Michaella Walsh see off Holly O’Neill in a good match to reach the semis for the second year. Clodagh Walsh went one further this time out and won her match against Elisha Molloy to complete the semi final line up.
Grace was in fine form against Lillymay and won comfortably to make the final again while Clodagh showed great improvement since last year and won her match on the colours to meet Grace in the final.
Grace started well going 28 points ahead without a reply from Clodagh, however Clodagh got back into the match closing the gap but Grace proved the stronger and won the frame to give her the title once again.
Congratulations to Grace on retaining the title and to Clodagh for a great performance. We are delighted to see so many young girls coming out to participate in the sport and we thank them for their support. Thanks also to Louise who was on hand from Carlow with the group and helped during the day along with Christine who helped the young players throughout the day.
The future of female cue sports is at grass root level within our school and youth reach initiatives supported by RILSA.
Thanks to Paul & Bernie of Sharkx for their continued help and great support towards female cue sports.
We thank Sandra Corrigan, Brenda and all the staff of Ballinabranna N.S. and Karina and staff of Newbridge Educate Together for all their support.
