The second National RILSA mixed doubles championship took place at the RILSA Academy in Sharkx Newbridge recently and the event was a great success.

At the quarter final stages Annette Newman & Dan Carroll had a good 2 nil win over Christine Carr & Peter McDermott while Tina & Robbie Keogh won their match 2 nil against their great friends Valerie & Tom Maloney to get to the semis.  Joe & Ann McMahon were in form and knocked out last years finalists Cathy & Eamon  to meet Tina & Robbie in the semis

As Michelle & John O’Boyle were seeded into the semis, it was up to Annette & Dan to try keep them from progressing.  However the first frame was close going in Michelle & John’s favour on the pink ball.  The second frame saw John make great breaks of 36 and 27 to win and again secure their place in the final once again.

In the other semi final Joe & Ann had a close match against Tina & Robbie with the match levelled at 1-1 it was nip and tuck in the final frame to see who would meet Michelle & John in the final, again it came down to the pink ball and Ann potted to take them through.

The final itself was very close with both couples levelled at 1-1 and Joe & Ann had chances to close out the 3rd frame but John got in and made a good 28 break to push on and take it down to the colours. With snookers needed on the blue for Joe & Ann it was John again with some great pots on both blue and pink to win the match and title for the second year in a row.

Congratulations to Michelle and John on retaining the title and to Joe & Ann on a fine performance.  Well done and a big thank you to all the couples for their participation and support in making this annual event a great success and in the process having a great time and enjoying the competition with good positive banter throughout.

Thanks again to Paul & Bernie of Sharkx for their much appreciated support and hospitality for this and indeed all our events during the season so far.  Our next event at the RILSA Academy will be the National Ladies Billiards Championship in a few weeks time, date to be decided soon.
