The Maureen Butler Cup was won by the in form Paula Judge at Sharkx Newbridge recently.  This newly added event to the RILSA calendar has proved popular among the players as they qualified through the National Rankings to get their rightful place at this event.  This event is now open to the top 16 players on the RILSA National Ranking list at the end of each season.

All the top 16 players are seeded into the draw automatically, while in the event that a qualifier or qualifiers are unable to make the competition, we continue down the ranking to fill any open places.  This will become a prize money event along with the National Championship and International Open.

On her way to the final, Paula Judge from Dublin had a hard last 16 bout against the current holder of the cup in Cathy Dunne also from Dublin, with the match level at 1-1 it came down to a black ball finish between these players, in which Paula potted to advance to the quarters where she met Christine Carr from Kildare.  Paula proved too strong for Christine and won 2-0.  In the semis Paula came up against Sandra Bryan from Wexford and Irish number 2.  Paula kept up her good form in this encounter and with a good break of 40 in frame 2 sealed her place in the final.

In the top half of the draw we saw current number 1 Annette Newman from Carlow play good snooker throughout her matches with 2-0 wins all the way to the final.  Annette started well against Tara Byrne also from Carlow in the last 16 and again won against Tina Keogh from Laois in the quarters.  Annette met another Carlow woman in the semis, Aine Brennan to win 2-0 to meet Paula in the final.

The final started with a bout of safety but Paula got in a had a good break of 21 and a number of small breaks to close out frame 1.  Annette had chances in the second but didn’t capitalise and Paula kept up her good potting and form to win 2-0 and claim the Maureen Butler title for the first time.

Congratulations to Paula on her great win and to Annette for her fine performance.

In the plate competition we saw some great snooker also among our young up and coming players, 15 year old Katie French from Kildare had a close match against 10 year old Grace Byrne from Carlow in their quarter final match to advance to the semis and a black ball finish against Valerie Maloney from Offaly in the semis for Katie’s first RILSA Final.

In the bottom of the plate draw we saw Tina Keogh from Laois come through a tough match against Tara Byrne in the Quarters and Christine Carr in the semis to meet Katie in the final.  It was nip and tuck all the way through between these players as it came down to a black ball finish.  After a bout of play on the black, it was Tina who potted for game and match.

11 year old Roisin Beale from Newbridge was also among the mix of young players who is improving all the time and like all our young players are dedicated and eager to make progress in their new chosen sport.  We at RILSA are here to help and support them every step of the way and we are delighted to have these young players in our Association.

Congratulations to Tina on her win and to Katie for a great performance
