The Republic of Ireland Ladies Snooker Association held their 1st Ranking event of the 2018-2019 season, The Griffith Cup at D’Arcy McGees in Spawell recently.  With a good entry for this event and it certainly didn’t disappoint as the standard of our players on the day showed some great displays of snooker from our participants.

The top half of the draw saw Irish number 1, Annette Newman from Carlow see off our snooker scholarship student, Jennifer Earle (Dublin) with a 2 nil win.  Jennifer played well during their bout and will learn a great deal from our experienced players as she improves in the sport.  Annette met Margaret Browne (Meath) in the quarters and played well to win 2 nil against Margaret who is one of our seasoned players.  Cathy Dunne the Irish number 2 saw off Valerie Maloney (Offaly) with a good 2 nil win in their quarter-final match to meet Annette in the semis.

In their semi final match Annette had a chance to take the first frame however Cathy potted pink and black to take it and went on to play very well in frame 2 to win the match 2 nil for a place in the final.

The bottom half of the draw saw the current Irish Champion Paula Judge (Dublin) take on Irish number 3 Sandra Bryan from Wexford in the last 16.  Sandra one of our tough match players played well but Paula was stronger and came through their bout 2 frames to nil.  We are delighted to see Sandra back on the tour after a number of months away.  Paula went on to play Tina Keogh from Portarlington and went up a gear with breaks of 29 and 32 to seal a good 2 nil win over the ever improving Tina Keogh.

Louise Jordan from Meath came back to ladies snooker after a number of years away from the sport to take on Christine Carr from Kildare in the last 16, while she had to fight hard to make it through the match with a 2 nil win over Christine it certainly gave her the edge as she progressed to the quarters where she again produced the goods to take a 2 nil win over Rachel Bradley from Kildare to meet Paula in the semis.

Their semi final match was a very close affair with Paula just pippin Louise in frame 1 on the pink ball, however Louise came back to level at 1-1 on a black ball finish.  Paula once again had to fight hard to push it all the way down to another black ball decider in which she potted to take the match and meet Cathy in the final.

The final started well for Cathy looking good to take the first but Paula had a good 41 break to take it and again frame 2 was close for the most part with Paula going 2 up in this best of 5 frame final.  Frame 3 saw good play from Cathy however Paula was now in top form and produced a great 46 break to take frame and title of Griffith Cup Champion 2018.

Congratulations to Paula on her win and to Cathy for a fine performance.  Thanks to all our players for their support and we welcome Louise Jordan back to RILSA and I’m sure we will see a lot more from her during the season.  Also we welcome Jennifer Earle our scholarship student to the National Tour season and Dave Earle who had been away from the sport for a number of years, we are delighted to now see him back and supporting his daughter Jennifer as she makes progress in the sport.

The Provisional National Ranking now sees Annette Newman holding number 1 with Paula Judge close on her heels in 2nd place, Tina Keogh is in 3rd while Cathy Dunne takes up 4 spot and Valerie Maloney holding 5th.  Margaret Browne moves back into the top 16 from 20th at 15th while Sandra Bryan like Margaret has made it back into the top 16 at 16th spot.  Louise Jordans semi final spot put’s her 20th while young Jennifer Earle is now up from 135th to 53rd on the National list.

A special thanks to Richie McAuley and staff of Spawell for all their support and supplying excellent facilities for our event,  They really made everyone very welcome and we will be back again in 2019 to Spawell.
