The Republic of Ireland Ladies Snooker Association conducted an Introductory Coaching Course at their Academy at Sharkx Newbridge recently.
The course was designed to cater for our growing School/College and Youth Reach membership. A number of key areas were addressed on the course such as the importance of Garda Vetting and Child Protection of those attending the course must comply with in order to partake in such courses.
The day started with an introduction by World Snooker Coach Dan Carroll with assistance of National Coach Annette Newman.
Table maintenance and upkeep was first on the agenda, where all the students were given instruction and then they all had a turn at carrying out inspection of tables including brushing, blocking, ironing and marking tables.
The basic rules of snooker was next followed by a question and answer session.
Dr Gerard Colleran give a seminar on Drugs in Sport that was very well received and appreciated by all in attendance.
Our National Billiards Coach, Aidan Murray gave a 45 minute introduction to Billiards and all the students had a chance to try out the sport.
After lunch Dan Carroll continued with the basics in coaching, giving demonstrations on the Bridge, Bridge Arm, the Grip, and Stance followed by alignment and striking the centre of the cue ball. All the students then had to give their own demonstrations and explanations on these basic techniques and skills.
A session on mini games and fun ideas was introduced by Dan followed with the presentation of certs to all those attending the first RILSA Coaching Course.
All those in attendance were delighted with the content and they all really enjoyed the day. They will now assist in helping those players in their areas of responsibility with the basics to get started in the sport and are very confident in imparting the knowledge learned on the course.
RILSA now has 12 coaches on their panel and it’s hoped to run another course before end of 2017 followed by courses every year to enable all of our members Schools/Colleges and YR’s around Ireland to have a coach on hand to help introduce the sport and develop players for the future.
Congratulations to Dave Seales, Gary Seales, Declan Tuohy, Gerard Colleran, Leon Costello and Aileen Curran for their participation and in doing so, received Introductory Level Certificates.
Thanks to Annette for all her help on the day and also to Gerard and Aidan for rheir input in making this course a fantastic success.
A big thank you to Paul and Bernie of Sharkx for their support as always.
