Saturday 27th September 2014 was the date that saw the revival of the Republic of Ireland Ladies Snooker Association National Championship take place in Joey’s Snooker Club, Dublin. A fantastic turnout of 18 players got proceedings under way for this event that was last held in 2003. With the help and support of Stars Academy Ireland, the new Ladies Association (R.I.L.S.A) is well on its way to becoming a strong organisation and its future is secure.
We had representatives from Counties Dublin, Wexford, Kilkenny, Carlow, Meath, Tipperary, Laois and Kildare at the Championships and its great to see the younger ladies starting to take up the sport and this is mainly due to the School & College Initiative and the support of the teachers. Alan Bailey from the CBS Westland Row in Dublin has set up table time for the girls within the School and this is great as 6 young players took part from the School. Louisa Murray from St Andrews Resource Centre in Dublin is also involved with the sport and she took part and enjoyed the day in Joeys.
Our Secretary Leona O’Connor started to play snooker recently and is very much involved with the setting up of the snooker facilities within Colaiste Cluan Meala School in Tipperary where she teaches and has a number of young girls starting out playing the sport. Laura Regan one of the students from the School was delighted with her first tournament and is looking forward to playing in more.
The Kilbarrack Youth Project who recently joined Stars Academy Ireland by taking a full size table had Kerry Ann Smyth represent them at the Championships.
The Tournament itself was a great success, with great play from everyone and a fantastic athmosphere throughout the event. The top half of the draw saw the RILSA President Margaret Browne reach the semis beating Faye Jameson, Kerry Ann Smyth and Robyn Delaney without dropping a frame, the same for Sandra Bryan as ousted Zara Lawless and Christine Carr to meet Margaret in the semis. The bottom half of the draw had similar results for Annette Newman beating Robyn Boyd and Veronica Harvey for a semi final place and Emirjeta Doda saw off Leona O’Connor in the last 16, but had a match on her hands against Esther McCarroll where it levelled at 1-1, but Emirjeta held her nerve and took the 3rd frame to complete the semi final line up.
Annette was firing on all cylinders and won her match against Emirjeta 2 nil to give her a place in the final. Sandra and Margaret’s semi final levelled at 1-1, the 3rd frame was close all the way and it came down to a black ball, both players had chances but it was Sandra who potted the black to take her into the final.
The first frame saw Sandra go ahead and with 16 in it and 18 remaining and only needing the blue, Annette potted a great blue and pink and took on a difficult black to take the first frame. The second frame saw Sandra go ahead again and kept the pressure on and levelled the match 1-1, the 3rd frame started scrappy but Sandra went ahead by 34 points and with only 35 remaining, it was going to be difficult to come back for Annette, Sandra took the vital colours to win the match and take the title of RILSA National Snooker Champion 2014.
Congratulations to Sandra on her win and to Annette on her fine performance. Thanks to each and everyone for taking part and supporting the event. A big thank you to Derek Fagan and Keith for providing excellent facilities and help throughout the day.
RILSA has introduced an Intermediate Ladies Rankings and this is for those who are knocked out of the prelim and first rounds of the National Rankings. This will encourage more ladies to play and keep the interest going. Valerie Maloney took this first Intermediate title beating Tina Keogh both from the Portarlington S.C. Laois in their final. Congratulations to Valerie on her win and to Tina on her great performance. Its great to see all these new faces coming along and enjoying the sport and I wish them well for the future and we look forward to seeing everyone at the first RILSA Ranking in October. The Ranking list will be published soon.
