The start of the new Stars Academy Ireland season kicked off with the U/12 event on Saturday 26th
January at the Ivy Rooms Carlow, with entries up on last year and representatives from Carlow,
Dublin, Kilkenny, Laois, Mayo and Cavan set the scene for a great days snooker. Our first young
lady player since the mid 1990′s Emily Bolger from Tullow Co Carlow originally from Dublin took
to the event extremely well reaching the Semi final stages on her first Stars event, seeing off Liam
Nolan from Carlow and Patrick Corcoran from Dublin on her way. In the same half of the draw Aaron
Goldrick reached the semis with two breaks of 25 beating James Neville from Dublin and a good
win over Joe La Cumbre from the CYMS in Portarlington to meet Emily. The other half of the draw
saw Corey Ramsbottom in fine form beating Josh Swaine and James Bray Duffy two nil each with
breaks of 21,26,39 along the way to the semis. Young Jordan Tierney from Dublin was firing on all
cylinders beating Seamus McCullough from Carlow and Ciaran Sheridan from Dublin to meet Corey
in the semis. The semi final between Corey and Jordan went all the way to the last frame with Corey
clearing up to take him into the U/12 final for the second time. Aaron Goldrick was playing well
against Emily winning the first frame comfortably but Emily put the pressure on in frame two to bring
it down to the last few colors. Aaron held his nerve and took it to give him a final meeting with Corey.
The final saw some great snooker indeed from the two 10 year olds, the standard is growing all the
time among these young players and the safety and tactical play was second to none. with the match
leveled at 1-1 it was nip and tuck for a while in the final frame but Corey proved the stronger on the
day and took the match and retained his U/12 Title. Congratulations to Corey on his win and to Aaron
on a fine performance. Thanks to everyone who took part and supported on the day. Special thanks to
Annette Newman and Marion & Jim and staff of the Ivy Rooms for providing excellent facilities on
the day. Thanks to all again for making such great efforts in travel and support towards these events.
