Annette Newman from Carlow won the RILSA National Amateur Snooker Ranking event the Mary Raymond Cup recently and for the 5th time in her career, a fantastic achievement for her. Our up and coming young player Natalia Trochonowicz from Kildare was the runner up in the event, one to watch out for in the future
The Mary Raymond Cup is a treasured event on our National Calendar of Events and the competition between the ladies to get their name on the Cup is very evident each year its played. Annette remembers Mary Raymond on the RILSA tour back in the early 1980,s and is privileged to have won it not just once but now 5 times over the years.
In the prelim round Natalia Trochonowicz from Kildare had a good 2 frames to nil win over Jackie Trulock from Dublin to move into the quarters and Joanna Ward from Kildare had a good 2 nil win over Stephanie Foley from Carlow to complete the quarter final lineup
Annette Newman from Carlow and the provisional number 1 seed had a 2 frames to nil win in her quarter final match against Brigid Mulvany from Dublin for a place in the semis. Christine Carr from Kildare went through to the semis over Valerie Maloney from Laois
At the other end of the draw the number 2 seed on the provisional rankings Veronica Hallahan from Dublin saw off a challenge from Joanna to get through on a 2 nil scoreline for a semi final place and on the other table our National U21 Snooker Champion Qianhui Ye from Wicklow had to Yield to Natalia who put up a good fight to get over the line in their match 2 frames to nil but close with Natalia now moving into the semis against Veronica
Christine took frame 1 against Annette on a black ball but Annette responded well in the second to level the match and in the 3rd frame Annette cleared the colours for game and match and a place in the final. On the other table Natalia took frame 1 with Veronica responding to level the match and again it would go all the way to the colours with Natalia picking off from brown to pink for the win
In the final Annette showed her experience over the youngster Natalia and played good snooker to take a 2 frames to nil win but Annette praised Natalia for her good run to the final and the respect she showed throughout the tournament will certainly bode well for her in the future
Congratulations to Annette on her win and well done to Natalia on a great performance, well done to to all the players on the day, it was a very enjoyable event. Thanks to Stephanie and Martin Foley for their help refereeing and thanks as always to Bernie, Paul and staff of Sharkx for all their support
